The Effects of Vitamins for Irritable Bowel Syndrome


The symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome can vary from person to person. There are people who experience symptoms of diarrhea with their irritable bowel syndrome while there are some people who experience constipation. Vitamins generally cause chemical reactions in the stomach and these reactions can either be beneficial or harmful to a person's IBS. Here are some common effects of vitamins for irritable bowel syndrome:


1) Vitamin C ? Also known as ascorbic acid, this vitamin has a laxative effect. People should be careful in taking this vitamin for irritable bowel syndrome as it can cause diarrhea when it reaches the stomach. People already suffering from symptoms of diarrhea should monitor their intake of vitamin C very closely.


Taking this vitamin for irritable bowel syndrome may also cause gas and bloating. This occurs when the acid of the vitamin reacts with the alkaline setting of the lower intestinal tract. You can try to observe this reaction by dropping a couple of mentos on a glass of diet coke.


2) Calcium ? This vitamin for irritable bowel syndrome can have either a laxative or constipating effect on a person, depending on the type. People suffering from IBS should try to discover hat type of calcium is right for them:

1) Try to get balanced doses of your vitamins - When buying supplements, make sure that those supplements deliver the right amounts of vitamins you need. 3) Consult a pharmacist ? Remember that there are different effects of vitamins for irritable bowel syndrome. If you are unsure regarding which vitamin supplement to take, you should get help from a pharmacist in finding the mildest vitamin for irritable bowel syndrome.


4) Take separate vitamins separately ? Vitamins for irritable bowel syndrome also react in various ways with each other. For the best absorption of nutrients, you should try taking vitamins one type at a time.

Working as a nutritional consultant, I get asked a lot, ?If our body does make our own digestive enzymes, then why do we need to supplement them??

My usual response to that question is you most likely don?t need to supplement them if and only if you are eating approximately 90% fresh raw foods which naturally contain enzymes. However, as you and I both know, this is not the case, especially with the Standard American Diet, appropriately abbreviated at SAD.

When we eat, our food sits in our stomach for about 45 minutes before making its way through the duodenum. Not enough digestion occurs in our stomachs because we lake the enzymes naturally found in foods which is killed in heating and processing.

So imagine the benefit of adding a balanced broad spectrum digestive enzyme supplement to this process.

Approximately 60-80% of our energy goes to digestion. Supplementing digestive enzymes greatly reduces the burden on the pancreas and the entire digestive process by assisting in breaking down foods into smaller and smaller components that become much easier to assimilate. This greatly increases our energy.

I have had reports back from people who take digestive enzymes that after eating they used to feel full and sluggish. But after taking them, they are filled with energy and no longer slip into the ?food coma? after a large meal.

You can also choose to make one to two changes in your habits every week. For example, in the first week, you can decide that you will not eat fried foods and walk daily during your lunch break. In the second week, you can stop eating fat rich dairy products and start jogging in the morning. Your body will get sufficient time to react to such changes and you will succeed in achieving healthy weight loss. You should not target weight loss of more than two pounds each week.


Some people also keep a record of their diet and exercise. Analyze your food habits and exercise levels every week and make necessary improvements in your weight loss program. Increase the quantity of healthy food items that your take and reduce the unhealthy ones every week.


You should also be regular in your meals and snacks. If you skip a meal, you will be hungry after a few hours and your body will demand high energy diet. You will be tempted to eat sugar-rich food such as pastry and chocolate.


If other members in your family also want to reduce weight, then the entire family can choose to eat healthy diet. This will reduce your access to fat rich stuff and fast food. With reduced access, you will be less tempted to eat these unhealthy foods.
